Setting up your new clock
( 13 )
There is packing against the cable pulleys.
This is to keep pressure on the cable pulley
during shipping so the cables don't unravel
on the cable spool. You do not need to remove
these blocks at this time. After the clock has
been running for a few hours, the weights will
drop and these blocks will either just fall out,
or you just lift them off of the pulleys.
( 14 )
Now you will grip the pendulum leader of the clock
mechanism with one hand and slip the top of the
pendulum into the slot for the pendulum. There
is more information about the pendulum and
suspension spring in the service page titled
"The Suspension Spring".
( 15 )
The weights are labeled "L", "C", "R" for left, center
and right. This is as you face the clock. The L goes
on your left. As a rule the "R" or right weight is the
heaviest weight and it runs the chime. If put the lighter
weight in that spot, it will not operate the chime.
( 16 )
Next you take the left "L" weight and simply hang
it on the loop at the bottom of the pulley. Then you
do the same with the "C" and the "R".
( 17 )
You will want to use protective gloves for
this process. The weights are polished brass
and they do have a protective coating on them.
However the minerals from your hands can tarnish
the brass over a period of time. Notice in the above
picture, the back of the hand is touching the weight
to the left. Gloves would keep this from becoming a
problem. If you do touch the brass with your bare
hands, it is a good idea to take a soft dry cloth and
remove and prints. That might not seem too important
now, but a hundred years from now your great great
great grandkids might wish you had used gloves.
( 18 )
Now you simply give the pendulum a little push
to the right or left, and your new treasure has
come to life. If taken care of it should continue
to bring happiness to your family for generations to
come. It will take a couple days for the clock to
settle in so you know if it is running fast or slow.
regulating the clock can be part of the fun. If the
clock is running slow, simply turn the front of the
regulating nut toward the "F" for Faster. If it is
running fast, turn the front of the nut toward
the "S" for Slower.
And congratulations on your new clock. You did it!
